Mouth Cancer & Oral Health Screening
Oral cancer most commonly involves the lips or the tongue. It
may also occur on the
- Cheek lining
- Floor of the mouth
- Gums (gingiva)
- Roof of the mouth (palate)
- Salivary Glands
- Lymph Nodes
Most oral cancers are a type called squamous
cell carcinoma. These tend to spread quickly.
Smoking and other tobacco use are linked to most cases of oral
cancer. Heavy alcohol use also increases your risk for
oral cancer especially if the two are combined.
The five year survival rate of mouth cancer patients is just
50%.
However, early diagnosis gives patients a 90% survival.
Regular visit to your dentist will ensure you are professionally
screened for signs of mouth cancer. Talk to your dentists about the
process and mouth cancer risk factors.
Self-examination is a simple, potentially life-saving
process.
Look out for:
- Ulcers which do not heal within three weeks
- Red and white patches in the mouth
- Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth
