Glossary

Apollonia - Patron Saint of Dentistry

Bridge - 2 or more crowns, linked together to replace on or more missing teeth

Crown - An all-over covering for a heavily broken-down/ worn tooth. Made of metal, metal and ceramic or All-ceramic

Damon Braces - Use a very special and technologically advanced bracket/ wire system to allow very fast tooth movement without the pain of normal orthodontics

Denture - A removable set of teeth

Gums - They should be pink and not bleed when brushed

Gum disease - or periodontitis, leads to the gradual loss of the gums and bone around the teeth causing them to become loose

Halitosis - Bad breath, often associated with gum-disease. Often easily treated

Implant - An all-titanium, specially coated screw that is fixed into the jaw to replace one or more missing teeth. Currently the "Gold Standard" of tooth replacement

Mouthguard - Essential for contact sport players: they should be custom-made to provide maximum protection

Nerve - Each tooth has at least one nerve canal. Normally, severe toothache is caused by infection, inflammation or "death" of the tooth nerve. The tooth can usually be saved using Root-Canal-Treatment

Root Canal Treatment - The space in the root that was occupied by the tooth nerve is clean, shaped and filled. The tooth is "dead", but is kept so it can function as normal. A root canal treated tooth normally requires crowning to protect and seal it for the long-term
